However, historically medical and nursing students have been educated and largely practise separately from each other, and in quite distinct ways. Overall, the clinical practice experience for both professional groups is focused on the development of profession-specific knowledge. This is reflected in the structure and supervision during the clinical placements where students are located in the silo of their profession.

Importantly, there is no such thing as an occupational expert per se. These can only be made in the circumstances where that practice is enacted and where it is possible to make judgements about the efficacy and elegance or otherwise of that practice. e. throughout individuals’ life history). That is, individuals construct their own accounts of the occupational practice through engagement with it and learn about it in educational programmes and other kinds of experiences. Yet, that process of construction is not merely the transfer of knowledge osmosis like from the world outside the individuals into them.

For instance, against what might be assumed within the university setting, there can be no guarantee that the person supervising the particular student is from their particular discipline. To make their point, the authors outline three different instances of clinical team profiles and how these profiles generated very distinct models of student support and supervision, and, therefore, experiences for students. These profiles include the composition of the health-care team, the diversity of disciplines, the kind of shift arrangements, and the kinds of activities that were generated by factors such as location.
