Paintings at this time increasingly represented children with pets. Girls were often portrayed in less constrained clothes than in the past, often painted with gardens or similar natural setting as backgrounds; indeed, by the nineteenth century the garden itself had become a metaphor for childhood.

Indeed, the development of individual portraits of children and the growth of family portraiture testify to the efflorescence of new bourgeois domestic ideology from the eighteenth century onwards. Moreover, representations of children (and by implication, childhood) increasingly equated them with nature. But what exactly is nature? It is often used to describe groups or phenomena seen as other than, separate from or in opposition to, ‘culture’. Gardens, parks, fields of corn we so readily proclaim as ‘natural’ are in fact constructed by humans, both physically and semantically.

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate for T[hompson] & V[enables] to be tried by ten-year-olds, rather than adults, since this would mean, as juries are supposed to mean, judgement by one’s peers? I try this question out, saying it out aloud . . but the answer comes back: of course not. Ten-year-olds as jurors? I wouldn’t trust their maturity, their judgement, intelligence, the qualities said to be present in T & V when they killed James .
