Social protectionism The Industrial Revolution, culminating in the 1880s, the ‘golden age’ of Britain’s economic and industrial transformation, produced a society dependent on earning a living since the population now became centred around major areas of industrial activity.

The present day Sir George Jessel in 1875 in Printing and Numerical Registering Co. v Sampson (1875) LR 19 Eq 462 stated: if there is one thing more than another which public policy requires, it is that men of full age and competent understanding shall have the utmost liberty in contracting, and that their contracts, when entered freely and voluntarily, shall be held sacred and shall be enforced by the Courts of Justice.
